Tankless and tank water heaters need to be sanitized yearly at a minimum to prevent mold and sulfur smelling water.  

 

Anode Rods - Aluminum and tankless water heaters do not have Anode rods (Dometic and Atwood heaters) but steel tanks do and should be inspected yearly and changed as needed (every 1-2 years) depending on how bad the water is.  These rods are sacrificial rods so the minerals eat away at the rod instead of the tank so its very important to make sure these are replaced when needed.  See "Pic 1".
